Hello friends today we are going to discuss what is axle in automobile as well as also we know their types, uses, etc.

Axle is the types of shaft but it is different to their working and operation.

Shaft and axle both are the most important parts of the automobile but here we only covers axle in detail.

So without wasting any time so let’s get to know what is axle in automobile as well as their types and uses.

What is Axle

Axle is a part of the machine which is used to support the other parts of the machine.

Axles are installed in all automobiles such as trucks, buses, cars, etc.

Axles are used in automobiles to transfer the load or weight of the automobiles to the wheels.

Axles are also used to connect or support the moving parts of a vehicle, such as the wheels of a vehicle.

The axle does not transfer any motion or torque.

The axle assembly consists of a shaft that transfers power inside the bearing.

The shaft and bearing fit inside the casing of the axle.

The casing protects against external contamination, dust, soil and also provides fixed support to the axle shaft.

Types of Axle

There are two types of axles are used in automobile.

Front Axle

Rear Axle

Front Axle

Front axle is installed in the front part of the vehicle, this axle helps in operating the steering system of the vehicle.

Types of Front Axle

Front axle can be divided into following five types

Live Axle

Dead Axle

Elliot Type Front Axle

Revers Elliot Type Front Axle

Lamoine Type Front Axle

Live Axle

The live axle is the axle by which power is transferred from the gearbox to the wheels.

In a live axle, the axle shaft rotates along with the wheels.

Dead Axle

A dead axle is an axle that is used only to transfer the weight of automobiles or vehicles to the wheels.

Elliot Type Front Axle

Different types of front axles are fitted in the vehicles, in which Elliot type front axle is one type, in this type of axle always the axle beam is yoke.

It is shaped, and fitted with a king pin with the stub axle in the center,  the vehicle turning left or right when it is required to turn it smoothly, and the driver does not face any problem.

Revers Elliot Type Front Axle

The reverse axle is always fitted in the shape of a stub axle while fitting , and in the same way the axle beam is centered and fixed with the help of a king pin .

This type of front axle is popularly known as reverse front axle, and hence it is called reverse Elliot type front axle.

Lamoine Type Front Axle

Whenever the axle is installed in the vehicle and if we talk about installing lamoine type front axle, then this stub axle is attached with the help of king pin by placing it on the axle beam, and this axle keeps on doing its work, and keeps on running for many kilometer.

This axle maintains the level of the vehicle when the vehicle is moving on the road.

Rear Axle

The rear axle is mounted in the rear of the vehicle.

This type of axle is used to transfer the power of the vehicle to the wheels.

This type of axle is divided into two parts.

The ends of the two parts are connected by a differential.

Types of Rear Axle

There are following four types of rear axle are used.

Full Floating Axle

Semi Floating Axle

Three Quarter Floating Axle

Stub Axle

Full Floating Axle

In a full floating axle, the axle shaft is attached to a flange or wheel hub.

The flange or wheel is the upper part of the hub or casing which is attached to the suspension system.

Inside the casing of the flange or wheel hub are two roller bearings attached to the axle shaft.

In this type of axle, the axle transfers only torque, while the weight of the vehicle is transferred directly to the wheel hub or flange through the suspension system.

In this type of axle, the load of the vehicle does not fall on the axle, due to which there is no bending in the axle.

This type of excel is used in heavy commercial vehicles such as trucks, bus, etc.

 Semi Floating Axle

In semi-floating axles, the axle shaft is attached to a flange or wheel hub.

A semi-floating axle has a bearing mounted on the axle shaft.

The upper part of the bearing is attached to the axle casing.

In this type of axle, the weight of the vehicle is transferred to the axle casing through the suspension system and the wheel is transferred through the axle casing.

In this type of axle, the load of the vehicle comes on the axle, due to which there is bending in the axle.

This type of axle is used in passenger cars.

 Three Quarter Floating Axle

In the three quarter floating axle, the shaft of the axle is attached to the flange or wheel hub.

In a three-quarter floating axle, the weight of the vehicle is transferred to both the flange and the axle.

 Stub Axle

The stub axle is located between the front axle and the front wheel and helps in operating the steering system.

The stub axle is mounted on both the left and right sides of the front axle.

There are four types of stub excel.
