A drawing

In order for the manufacturer to be able to know what you want, you will need to have a drawing ready. This will allow the assembler to determine what production resources will be needed. A drawing is also important for the manufacturer to start sourcing components so they can get ready for the assembly process.

Lead Time

If you require a desired date you need the cables delivered, you’ll need to give the manufacturer this information. Keep in mind however that they can only work so fast and in order to prevent missed dates, they’ll inform you if they feel they cannot realistically deliver on time or it might take slightly longer than expected beforehand.

There will likely be a back and forth discussion on this part of the deal in order for the cable assembly companies to be as transparent with you as possible.

Will You Allow Substitutions?

Sometimes a certain material might not be able to be easily sourced during the manufacturing process. In order for things to go as smoothly as possible, it’s wise to provide potential substitutions beforehand so the manufacturer can simply use it. It’s okay if you do need your custom cables to stick to the original plan beforehand, but this will need to be communicated beforehand with an understanding that there might be significant delays if this is the case.

Special Requirements

If you have special requirements regarding security, NDA’s or anything else, this should be communicated in advance so the manufacturer can adhere to your requests from the get go. Cable assembly manufacturers are used to these types of requests, it’s a part of being in the custom assembly business, so don’t be afraid to ask!

Other Things to Be Prepared For Beforehand

Besides the notes above, there are other things to be aware of before ordering custom cables:

  • Quantity
  • Connectors
  • Length
  • Cable type
  • What certifications will you be needing?
  • Do you require a prototype?

A lot of planning goes into custom cable ordering and assembly and in order to get exactly what you are looking for, communication with the manufacturer is key. Remember, they can only go off of the information you provide and are there adhere to your specific requirements.
