Business Analytics Certification is Not An Ornament

No, “business analytics certification” are not a set of business buzzwords to be included on your resume or your LinkedIn profile, just to make you look good. They are not empty high sounding ornamental terminology to help you fool around with prospective recruiters and hiring managers.

Business analytics certification is a genuine document that lets employers know that you have it in yourself what is needed to help various teams in the organization make sense of the enormous data, find important patterns and trends,  that if left unnoticed will result in losses for the business. It is proof that you are the right person to help organizations use big data and analytics to take the business to the next level and eventually to greaters heights of excellence and success.

Types of Business Analytics Certification

Business analytics certifications can be proprietary and specific to vendors.  For example a vendor called XYZ may offer a certification called “XYZ Certificate in Business Analytics”, or “XYZ Certificate in Machine Learning”, or “XYZ Advanced Big Data Certificate”, and so on.

That is to say vendors usually offer individual certificate courses in different streams of business analytics – namely data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, data visualization, business intelligence, data analysis, sales analytics. Some of them may offer different levels of courses, and accordingly different levels of certification – such as Basic Level Certification, Intermediate Level Certification, Advanced Level Certification, or other.

Certified Analytics Professional (CAP)

While most types of business analytics certification are specific to vendors and dependent on how vendors choose to name them, there is one type of certification that is common across all vendors. That is to say, there is a certification that is vendor neutral.  It is called “Certified Analytics Professional (CAP)”.

A Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) is a certification of one’s knowledge, skills and capability to use data science for helping with business decisions.

There is a qualification needed to get certified as a Certified Analytics Professional (CAP), and it is not for all and sundry.

  • A master’s degree in a related discipline, plus at least five years of relevant experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, plus seven years of experience in data or analytics.

There is another level that is lower to a Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) – called  Associate CAP. To  qualify for this, you need a master’s degree and just three years of relevant experience.

But for the Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) for which there is a defined set of qualification, other business analytics certification courses are for graduates or postgraduates in the streams of  Engineering, Finance, Maths, Statistics, Business Management or other related disciplines, with or without relevant experience
