The City walls of Dubrovnik are one of the most important fortification systems in the Middle Ages and were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Croatia by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1979.

Explore Lokrum Island

The lush green Lokrum Island, located just a few hundred meters from Dubrovnik’s mainland, is a beautiful contrast to the bustle and bustle of Dubrovnik. Lokrum’s visitors can visit the ruin of the medieval Benedictine Monastery and wander through its lush green botanical gardens with its resident peacocks, rabbits, and cool off in one of the island’s swimming spots. Lokrum doubles up as Qarth in Game of Thrones, with the Benedictine Monastery’s Cloister serving as the filming location.

Take a Day Trip to Mostar

Mostar is a popular day-trip choice for visitors to Dubrovnik. Mostar is the home of the famous Stari Most Bridge. It’s also home to its Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stay overnight in the Old Town

Dubrovnik Old Town, which is a truly special place, can be enjoyed over night. It can get crowded at times. Up to 10,000 people squeeze between the walls of this ancient city on the busiest days. Many cruise passengers are also there, so it can sometimes feel overwhelming and exhausting.

We felt that the city was alive and well in the evenings when it was quiet. Old Town guests and residents were the only ones who could see the real Dubrovnik. It is a magical and incredible place.

This boutique hotel is just 5 minutes walk from the Old Town’s Pile Gate entrance. The hotel is 5-10 minutes away from all sights. Our room had the most beautiful view in Old Town.

Go Green at Trsteno Arboretum

The tranquil Trsteno Arboretum is a botanical garden located 18km north of Dubrovnik. It was once home to a Dubrovnik noble and gained fame recently due to its frequent appearances as King’s Landing Gardens in Game of Thrones Seasons 3 and 4. The renaissance gardens, which are exotic and tranquil, date back to the 1400s. They are located in a small fishing community near Dubrovnik. As an option for their Game of Thrones Tour, this tour also includes the Trsteno Arboretum.

Dine Al Fresco in Dubrovnik Old Town

Dubrovnik’s warm, breezy evenings and spectacular sunsets make it the ideal place for al fresco dining. Dining al fresco was a great option in Old Town, where diners spill onto narrow streets and laughter fills the air. This is a great place to watch people!

Ride the Mount Srd Cable Car

Since 1969, the Dubrovnik Cable Car has carried passengers up and down Mount Srd. The bright orange cable cars can be seen zipping over the hillside. It provides relief from the scorching Croatian heat and allows you to climb the hill while taking in the breathtaking views of Dubrovnik Old Town, and the Adriatic.

Feast on an Ice Cream

Dolce Vita is a local ice cream shop that offers delicious crepes, ice cream and cakes at reasonable prices. This bustling shop is located on the Stradun’s side street. It is popular with both locals and tourists. Enjoy a street-side table at a highly sought-after location!

Visit the Rectors Palace

The 15th Century Gothic Renaissance Rector’s Palace was built originally for the Dubrovnik rector and is now a museum. It is home to the notorious Dungeon Prison, artwork, and original furniture. Game of Thrones fans can also enjoy some scenes from Season 2 in the courtyard.

Just Wander around the Old Town

Dubrovnik Old Town is one the most well-preserved medieval towns in the world. The narrow streets of cobbled streets offer a treasure trove of stunning buildings, Baroque churches, vibrant squares, and gleaming marble with burnt orange roofs.

We loved walking around the backstreets in early morning before the city woke up and in the evening when the sun was setting over the town.

You will have plenty of time to wander through tiny alleyways and shops, enjoy delicious ice cream, and take in the beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town.

Take a Day trip to Montenegro

Montenegro, another Balkan treasure, is another day trip option from Dubrovnik. Montenegro boasts stunning natural beauty, beautiful coastlines and majestic mountains. Many Montenegro highlights are included in tours departing from Dubrovnik, such as this one that includes Kotor and Perast.

Walk the Stradun

The Stradun is the main street of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. It connects Pile Gate to Ploce Gate. The glistening limestone pavement is bustling with activity every day, drawing thousands of people through it each day. Because of the 1667 earthquake, almost all the buildings on the Stradun are identical. There are also many restaurants, souvenir shops and galleries that spill onto the main Old Town street.

Check out the abandoned Hotel Belvedere

Hotel Belvedere is a favorite among Game of Throne players. Hotel Belvedere was once a luxury five-star hotel. It is now a deserted hotel just outside Dubrovnik, which was abandoned during Croatia’s War of Independence. The location was also used for the fight scene between Prince Oberyn and the Mountain, in the Season 4 finale, ‘The Mountain and the Viper. Despite some paint from Split soccer fans, the small amphitheatre can be instantly recognized.

18 | Jesuit Staircase

Just off Gunduliceva Poljana is the baroque Jesuit Staircase. This stunning piece of Dubrovnik architectural architecture can also be seen in the iconic Game of Thrones scene. Cercei’s famous Walk of Shame was started at the Jesuit Staircase. Cafés and shops were closed down, and hundreds of extras were brought in to line up the streets.

Take a Kayak Tour

The Adriatic’s turquoise waters are stunning and beg to be explored by kayak. The Old Town is home to many rental shops. Sunset kayaking is a great experience. You can enjoy the breathtaking views from the Old Town from the water, and you can also kayak to Lokrum Island to explore its beaches.

Visit the open-air market in Dubrovnik Old Town

The Gunduliceva Poljana Square, located at the base of Jesuit Staircase is where you will find the Dubrovnik Old Town open-air market. A variety of fruit and vegetable stands are located alongside stalls that sell local specialties, such as oils and lavender products.

21 | Dubrovnik Cathedral

The Romanesque Dubrovnik Cathedral has a rich history dating back to the 7th century. The Treasury contains relics that date back to the 11th century, including the most valuable treasure, the skull, arm and leg of Saint Blaise in gold. Legend has it that Richard the Lion Heart, a shipwreck of Lokrum, funded the Church. He was then taken in by the Dubrovniks.

Stroll around the Franciscan Monastery

The Franciscan Monastery, which is owned by the Order of the Friars Minor, and the Old Town complex, which consists of a monastery and a church as well as a library and pharmacy, is home to the Order of the Friars Minor. The pharmacy and beautiful gardens are the highlights of a visit. It dates back to 1317, making it the third oldest pharmacy still in operation in the world.

Church of St Blaise

Baroque Church of St Blaise, named after the protector of Dubrovnik, is one of the most iconic buildings on the Stradun. The altar, which is still active, is stunning and contains a beautiful 15th Century statue depicting St Blaise with a model from medieval Dubrovnik.

Enjoy the view from Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac, also known as the St Lawrence Fortress, is a magnificent fortress that is located just outside the Old City of Dubrovnik. It is immediately recognisable in Game of Thrones as the Red Keep at King’s Landing. This fortress made frequent appearances in Season 2, and 3. From one of the city’s most spectacular locations, you can enjoy stunning views of Dubrovnik Old Town.

Take a Day Trip to Ston

The defensive Walls of Ston are described as the ‘Great Wall of Europe’ and surround Ston in Southern Croatia. They, along with Dubrovnik represent King’s Landing as well as some of the Eyrie. Ston is popular as a day trip from Dubrovnik. Most tours include wine tasting, oyster tasting, and a visit on the island of Korcula.

Explore the quirky West Harbour

The West Harbour’s curious doors are a unique spot in Dubrovnik. They double as Blackwater Bay, where the gold cloaks were used to kill all of King Robert Baratheon’s children in one of Game of Thrones’ most famous scenes.

Take in the views from Minceta Fortress

Minceta Fortress was originally built as a rectangular tower in the 14th Century. It commands stunning views of Dubrovnik’s Old City and surrounding sea.

Step back in time at Fort Bokar

Fort Bokar is part of the Dubrovnik City Walls and is one of Europe’s oldest preserved forts. Fort Lovrijenac and the City Walls, as you walk along them, offer the best views of the fort.

Imagine what once was at the Old Town Pile Gate

The Pile Gate, one of our favorite spots in Dubrovnik is accessible via a drawbridge. A statue of St Blaise, Old Town protector, guards the gate. The gate is visited by thousands of people every day. Street musicians, artists and coin-makers also make it a hub of activity.
