Renewable energies are the future. We cannot keep relying on fossil fuels.

And in Australia and the UK, wind power is one of the biggest sources of renewable energy. In 2020 alone, an impressive 24% of the United Kingdom’s energy was generated by wind power.

With wind energy already sitting as a force to be reckoned with worldwide, and no sign of growth within the industry slowing, now is a great time to become a turbine blade technician. And with companies like Altitec working as Skylotec distributors, it is easier and safer than ever to work at heights.

What experience do you need before you start?

You might be surprised to learn that you don’t need that much experience to get started as a wind turbine blade technician.

Of course, if you want to advance your career and crack into those super high paying jobs, then experience is a must. But, before that, you just need to get on the ladder. And that doesn’t require a long list of experience.

To land a job as a turbine blade technician, you will first need to complete a course and get your qualifications. You can also choose to do an apprenticeship if you are looking for some hands-on learning experiences to boost your confidence before you get your first role.

Exact requirements can vary from country to country and company to company. At Altitec, we understand that everyone has to start somewhere. That is why we don’t demand that new workers have specific experience within the wind turbine sector.

Attitude and transferable skills are just as important. And if you’ve just finished training, you won’t necessarily have had a chance to build your experience yet.

An interest in sustainable energy and the possibilities of wind energy is a great place to start. Beyond that, you will need a willingness to learn. There are plenty of opportunities within the wind power sector, and being ready will help you make the most of every chance that comes your way.

What gives you an edge?

While you certainly don’t have to have years of experience to start working as a wind turbine blade technician, certain things will give you a boost.

Beyond the necessary qualifications, it can help to have practice as a rope-access technician or in another related role. Much of the inspection and repair work needed for wind turbine blades takes place way above the ground. Some familiarity with working at such heights will always be welcome. It is an added plus if you have experience using power ascenders.

How can Altitec help?

While experience in the wind sector isn’t necessary for anyone wanting to become a turbine blade technician, it certainly can help.

Altitec offers GWO accredited rotor blade repair training courses designed to offer students the innovative and hands-on experience they need to feel confident going into their role.

We have a course to suit you whether you are new to the industry and looking for adventures, already qualified as a rope-access technician and want to get involved in renewable energy, or are a wind farm owner or operator ready to improve repair knowledge.
