Bichons are related to a number of small breeds, including the following:
- Coton de Tulear dogs from the coast of Africa in Madagascar
- Bolognese from Bologna, Northern Italy
- Havanese dogs from Cuba
- Maltese breed from Malta
Like the Maltese, Bichons are also believed to have originally come from the Mediterranean, traveling from country to country through various trade routes.
They may be small— standing only a foot high— but Bichons are strong. Despite their size, these dogs are not included in the Toy breeds, according to the AKC. Instead, the club classifies Bichons as non-sporting dogs. All Bichon Frises are white, but puppies can be pale yellow or cream. Their eyes and noses are black.
