Apple unveils iPhone 14 with satellite SOS

Apple introduced new iPhone models with new features, such as the ability to send emergency messages from satellites and an adventure-focused Ultra Watch.

The company will test whether Apple’s relatively affluent customers will spend in the face of rising inflation.

Apple increased the cost of their lowest-end phone. Prices are the same as last year, but it no longer offers a cheaper option.

The iPhone will cost $799 and be available for pre-order on Sept. 9, with a release date of Sept. 16. The Plus variant will cost $899/$1,099 and be released in stores on the same day.

Apple is able to maintain its margins and discontinue lower-priced devices because they believe their higher-priced devices are still popular. “The decision or the strategy is Apple believes that it can sustain margins by discontinuing a lower-priced device in the lineup.”

Maps will show where the users are located and they can also use a satellite SOS to connect with emergency responders, even when they do not have stable phone service.

Apple is offering this service for free for two years. They did not specify what would happen after the allotted time.

Shares of iPhone’s satellite service contractor, Globalstar Inc., jumped 20 percent after they announced that they would be the machine’s operator for Apple.

95% of the cost for this investment will be covered by Apple, with Globalstar still needing to raise more debt in order to meet the construction and deployment expenses.

The stock gained almost 70% in the last month as it speculated they would work with Apple.

Other companies are currently working on the same functions. SpaceX founder Elon Musk said last month that they are in collaboration with T-Mobile to use its Starlink satellites to directly connect phones to the internet.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus will have a larger screen and processor chip like the previous model, the iPhone 13.

Apple watches

Apple releases a trio of new watches in Cupertino, California. This includes a new watch designed for extreme sports and the deep blue sea that can compete with companies like Garmin and Polar.

Runar Bjorhovde, the analyst at Canalys, said that Apple is competing in a competitive market with strong competition and needs to prove itself before it can make any headway.

The Apple Ultra is better equipped to endure strenuous outdoor activities because of its large battery and better waterproofing and temperature resistance. It also has improved GPS tracking.

The new Apple Watch models include an updated budget version called the SE and a Series 8 model with crash detection and low-power mode for 36 hours of battery life.

Other new models of iPhones will start at $499 and $299. The Ultra, which includes cellular in its base model, will start at $799 and be available on Sept 23.

Tech beast Apple is releasing a new temperature sensor on the new Apple series 8 watch that will work in conjunction with their previously released cycle tracking app to retroactively detect ovulation. The company emphasized how private its cycle tracking is.

Tech companies have increasingly been focusing on their privacy and reproductive health policies with the recent Supreme Court decision.

Apple states that they do not have the key to decrypt data of the user’s tracking information.

AirPods

The second-generation AirPods Pro will offer double the amount of noise cancellation as the original AirPods.

Accessories such as the Apple Watch may have been incentivized by existing iPhone users, but the iPhone is, and always will be, the core product of the company.

Apple’s stock was up 0.8pc after their presentation, lagging the S&P 500’s gain of 1.8pc during the session.

Apple has not given a preview of its mixed-reality headset. They are expected to release the device at the earliest in 2019, but may not until 2020.

There’s a project in the works for a rival headset called Project Cambria, which will be created by Meta Platforms Inc. This company is spending billions of dollars.
