When shopping for custom labels of any kind, you will have the option of two types of finishes – gloss and matte. If you know your way around a can of paint, you will probably have a good idea what each of these terms refers to.

A label with a gloss finish will have a bright and shiny appearance, which reflects light in a similar way to a sheet of glass or a mirror. Gloss labels are smooth to the touch and have the look of a seamless, non-porous surface – just as would be the case with a coat of gloss paint.

With matte labels, the texture of the surface diffuses light over a broader area to create a ‘flatter’ look. Some describe the finish of a matte surface as ‘dull’, but this does not do the effect justice as it can be just as eye-catching.

There are also various different types of labels available that sit between the two extremes – satin, silk, semi-gloss and other ‘hybrid’ finishes.

Matte vs Gloss Labels

Choosing between the two is predominantly a case of personal preference. There’s no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ choice in terms of appearance, but practicality should also be factored in.

In specific, where and how you intend to use your labels could be a factor in determining which is more appropriate.

Gloss Labels

For example, gloss labels with a bright and shiny finish are undeniably eye-catching. They can be used to draw attention to specific features or important information, just as they can help a product stand out from its surroundings.

In terms of practicality, gloss labels with a smooth finish are usually tougher and more durable. A smooth and glossy surface may offer a certain level of protection against moisture, making it a good choice for humid environments.

It may also be possible to wipe a glossy label clean with a cloth, sponge or towel, without it causing any damage to the material.

Matte Labels

Some would argue that matte labels create a more sophisticated visual effect. They are not as bright or eye-catching, but instead bring the benefit of understated elegance. In which case, they could be a better choice for luxury products, where distinction takes precedence over high-impact presentation.

Most standard matte labels are susceptible to damage upon coming into contact with moisture and may therefore not be suitable for high humidity environments. However, waterproof materials can be used to produce matte labels, which are just as durable and hardwearing as comparable gloss labels.

Written and printed text on a matte background is much easier and more comfortable to read and can also make it easier for scanners to read QR codes and barcodes.
