It’s all about nutrition. One good reason why consumers should choose organic products is invisible to the naked eye. It has to do with diet. Studies have shown that organically grown foods contain more nutrients than normal foods. Scientists believe this is because pesticides influence the soil in which the produce is grown. Pesticides strip the soil of organic compounds, making it less able to support plant growth.

The popularity and demand for organic produce have increased dramatically with the growing awareness of people about food. How has this impacted production? It means that the demand for organic food has increased so much in recent years that there are now certified organic farms in every state in the United States.

But what does “certified organic” mean? Only products that are at least 95% organic can carry this label. Simply stating that a product is organic is not always enough. Products labeled “organic” may be better than conventional products, but they are not as safe as “certified organic” products.

Organic products are products that are grown without the use of prohibited substances. What are “prohibited substances”? These are things like radiation, sewage sludge, genetic engineering or so-called genetically modified products. Organic farmers not only reject these usual methods, they also apply their own growing methods, such as crop rotation and natural composting, so that their plants stay and grow healthier.

So who’s buying organic produce? You may be surprised to find out. Statistics show that

Buy more organic products than whites.

But it’s not just the wealthy who buy organic. Studies show that half of the consumers who regularly buy organic products earn less than $50,000 a year. Surprisingly, the people who spend the most money on organic products are not the wealthy, as is commonly thought. The most frequent buyers of organic products earn less than $25,000 per household per year!

Type 2 diabetes is no longer a disease that you just have to live with. It does not have to get worse and worse. Eating organic foods may be a step toward containing the disease.
