An SWMS gives everyone at a work site—the workers, their supervisors, and anyone else who has a good reason to be there—the information they need to know about the potential hazards of the site, the high-risk work that will be done there, and what steps are being taken to reduce that risk.
What an SWMS Example is NOT is a manual of how to do things. An SWMS will not have step-by-step instructions for a procedure, task, or operation. Instead, it’s an admission of risk and a statement of how to deal with it. In general, the SWMS and the procedure documents will work together. The procedure documents will be written as part of the SWMS’s risk reduction plan.
Who is in charge of making the SWMS?
A Person Conducting a Business Undertaking (PCBU) needs to make an SWMS example for any work considered High-Risk Construction Work (HRCW) or any work involving energized electrical work.
If there is a main contractor on the job site, the SWMS needs to be run by the main contractor or the company that ordered or started the work. This doesn’t mean that they have to make it, but they are in charge of gathering the site’s SWMS documents and ensuring that their rules are followed. It’s possible, though, that the subcontractor, as the person “on the ground,” will be in charge of looking at the site and making the SWMS.

Since every work site is different, every SWMS will also be different. But there are templates you can use, like NECA’s ones. These were written by lawyers who are experts at making these documents.
Using one of these templates, you can make your SWMS for the job site.
The SWMS should have the following details:
What kind of work is being done?
– The site’s risks to health and safety.
– The dangers that could come from those dangers.
– An explanation of how these risks can be eliminated or, if that’s not possible, how they can be controlled and reduced as much as possible.
– How these risk control measures will be put into place, managed, and checked by people on-site.

Some parts of a good safe work method statement apply to everyone, and we’ll look at those in the SWMS example below. However, there are also parts that you can interpret and make your own.
