As the name suggests, the Solar Sailor is a vessel wandering here and there in Sydney Harbour. It doesn’t make much noise and is quite modest in size. For the same reason, most people, nationally and internationally, got attracted to it and have considered it a marine transporter. However, it is also called Solar Sailor, an icon made by Solar Sailor Holdings Pvt Ltd.

Let’s take a look at the solar sailor also in the picture below:

There are plenty of solar panels present on the ship that will ensure that each ray of sunlight that comes in contact with the ship contributes by generating some power.

In this article, we’ll get to know more about the solar sailor:

What Does the Solar Sailor Utilize?

A solar sailor doesn’t utilize one kind of energy to power the utilities of the vessel. That energy is taken from the following sources usually:

  • Electricity is taken from batteries (charged).
  • Conventional generators that run on fuel.
  • Solar and Wind energies are usually taken from Solar Wing

Even in its stationary state, it utilizes both wind and solar energies which isn’t alarming either since these are available in infinite amounts for all. Another reason for using these is that these energy sources end up reducing the running cost and also increase the efficiency which is not really possible if the same old methods (coal & natural gas) are being used.

Solar Wing is mainly the technology used behind solar sailors. Solar Wing is a solid sail covered in solar panels that allow the rays of sunlight to interact with them in order to generate power which ultimately keeps the sailor running for longer periods of time. Fins are also attached to panels to increase the interaction time for panels and look more like the residential solar panels. So, solar sailor isn’t a bad idea at all, rather it is a walking tool that can generate power with the minimum cost if we don’t take the capital cost into account.

How does a Solar Wing Work?

Batteries are stored in the sailor which is charged using the power generated by wings which are further used for various purposes. The batteries then power different utilities such as AC, fridges, lights, and other such systems. Apart from that, fins are there to capture wind energy coming in contact with the ship which is then used to generate power also.
