If you are carrying firearms for the first time, you might have more than a few questions. As you go through the process of applying for a license and taking CCW classes, some of these will be answered. Here are some additional tips for after you get out of the concealed carry store.

The Correct Training

As you have probably attended CCW classes to qualify for a license, you might think you have acquired the necessary training. However, most classes out there only explain to you the handgun laws of the state. That is essential, but not nearly enough. You need to get proper training on at least the basics of carrying, drawing, and firing a weapon if you intend to conceal carry. You will not regret being prepared for self-defense in case you do find yourself in such a situation.

Keep It Concealed

If you have just started carrying, chances are that your handgun will show against your clothing, or be exposed in a moment of carelessness. Printing or exposing can also be a result of complacency. If you carry one every day everywhere you go, you probably don’t think twice about your weapon showing. This kind of negligence can easily lead to unnecessary trouble if someone makes a panic call to 911 after noticing your gun.

Always Be Prepared

If you are starting to concealed carry, do your best to have your CCW on you at all times. Whether you are going out on a quick errand or for a longer trip, don’t leave your gun at home. Incidents happen unexpectedly, and you don’t want to be standing there unarmed, remembering exactly where your gun is, and not being able to do anything about it.

Never Take Safety Lightly

Get proper training, know the ins and outs of how your handgun works, don’t let yourself get rusty, and never ignore safety protocols. Understand the techniques of firing your handgun without causing any additional burns or injuries. Whether you carry it condition-one (a round in the chamber) or keep it unloaded is up to you, but make sure no accidents happen.

Buy A Proper Holster

The accidents we were just talking about can be easily prevented by getting yourself a proper holster. Everyone has their own preferences, from shoulder holsters, on or in the waistband, to ankle holsters. The standard, of course, is IWB, but one size doesn’t fit all here. Whichever you choose, make sure it guards the trigger, conceals the gun properly, doesn’t snag on the fabric, and is custom-fitted to your weapon.

Know The Firearm Laws

Keep yourself educated of the firearm laws not only of the region and state you live in, but also of the places outside of your area that you frequent. It is generally a good idea to look up state laws on firearms before you leave, if you are traveling to a new place.
