Introduction

The South American Tradescantia albiflora (albovittata) is a medium-sized houseplant. It features green and white striped leaves that grow on fleshy stalks that trail. The stems will grow downwards if let to develop, creating a hanging plant or clipped to form a tiny bush-like plant.

Growth

One of the simplest indoor plants to grow is Tradescantia. It can live in a wide range of environments and is quite tough to kill, making it ideal for novices. This plant is extremely resistant and will soon recover from any carelessness.

Water

A modest amount of water is prefered for Tradescantia albo. Allow the soil to dry somewhat between watering and water once or twice a week. When there isn’t enough water, the leaves shrivel and shut up.

Light

Tradescantia albo prefers bright indirect lighting, while a small quantity of direct light in the morning is OK. The design and colours on the leaves will not be as bright if it does not receive enough light. If the leaves are exposed to too much light, they will burn and turn brown.

Temperature

Normal home temperatures and humidity levels will suffice. Although more humidity is not required, spraying your tradescantia albo once a week can help it grow.

Propagation

Tradescantia albo is a very simple plant to grow. Simply take a 5-7cm-long cutting, remove the few bottom leaves, and plant in soil or water. Within a week, the cutting will begin to sprout roots. It may be transplanted into larger plant pots after the roots have grown sufficiently.
