Botox injection is a well-known term around the world. However, when you are going in for your first Botox injections, it is important to know what to expect from the treatment.

What is Botox?

Botox is a brand name of botulinum toxin. It works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles in the face that cause various signs of aging such as the laugh lines (creases that form at the sides of the mouth), crow’s feet (wrinkles that form around the outer corners of the eyes), frown lines and other types of fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox treatment results in the improved appearance of wrinkles and younger-looking skin.

Here is what to expect from getting Botox for the first time.

It likely won’t hurt

Botox needles are extremely thin thus making the treatment comfortable and pleasant. However, if you have a low pain tolerance you can get numbing cream or ice packs placed on the treatment area before and after the procedure to help numb the area. Most individuals however find Botox injections quite tolerable.

You may experience some bruising, redness, and swelling immediately after the treatment

There is always a possibility of developing small red bumps at the injection sites but these tend to resolve within 20-30 minutes after the treatment. Also sometimes bruising (which is usually minimal) can last for a couple of days before it resolves. It is always important to avoid touching or massaging the injection sites as this can cause the situation to worsen.

Taking certain medications such as aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs before or immediately after the treatment can cause swelling in the treatment area. Your practitioner will let you know when it is safe to resume your medication (if you take any).

Avoid working out

The general rule is to avoid working out at least 4 hours after the Botox treatment, this includes lying down or bending over. However, it is ideal to wait for 24 hours before resuming your normal exercise routine. This is because strenuous movements increase the risk of the Botox shifting from where it was carefully injected.

Restriction of muscle movement

Botox is a muscle relaxer, hence when you receive it your muscle movement will be restricted on where it has been injected. It will temporarily paralyze the muscles that cause the wrinkles and fine lines to appear.

Botox injection results will last between three to four months

The effects of Botox injections will start showing within a week after the treatment and they’ll last for about three to four months. Planning your future visits with Plastic Surgeon are important to maintain the results.

The great thing about Botox treatment is that it’ll only take a few minutes and its anti-aging effects are quite popular. It is important to note that Botox results vary from person to person but when you’re working with a professional you can be sure that you’ll achieve a younger, fresher-looking appearance.
