Cannabis-Infused Treatments Are On Trend

At some point, the majority of us have been exposed to cannabis—whether we know it or not. But now, a whole industry dedicated to making the drug accessible at any time and in any way possible has emerged. More people than ever are using pot (though some experts say that’s not necessarily a good thing), making the market potentially lucrative.
The products being marketed target different audiences—from medical users looking for something safe to get them through a long day of work, to recreational consumers who simply want to enjoy their favorite hobby without getting caught.
In conversations about medicinal use, one topic often comes up: edibles. And while they may sound appealing, particularly to patients with conditions like cancer and epilepsy, the reality is those products can do more harm than good. People can become overly excited by how palatable something tastes, thinking that means it won’t give them a high. Only later do they find out that the edible was spiked with CBD oil—which does nothing for pain relief, but actually makes you feel worse due to the psychoactive effects of THC.
So what’s a patient trying to cope with chronic pain supposed to do? Should they even try edibles? What if they want both THC and CBD?
To learn more about the ins and outs of cannabis-infused treatments, we turned to Dr. James Fadiman, author of “The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide” and founder/director of the Mind Research Network, a research institute devoted to studying psychedelics. Here, he shares his expertise on the booming industry, including what happens to your brain when ingesting cannabinoids, whether it’s safe to mix CBD and THC, and the best ways to consume these products.
What Is Cannabis Infusion?
If you’ve seen advertisements for tinctures or vape pens that promise to deliver therapeutic doses of THC or CBD, you might think you understand what goes into these products, but in fact, you probably don’t. In a nutshell, cannabis infusions are basically water-based solutions that combine cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and sometimes other ingredients, depending on the product.
These solutions are meant to mimic the effects of smoking marijuana; however, unlike weed, cannabis infusion doesn’t involve combustion. Instead, it relies on vaporization to release active compounds into the lungs.
How Does It Work?
As mentioned above, cannabis infusions rely on vaporization. You could compare it to a glass of wine at dinner, where the alcohol warms the body and relaxes muscles, but isn’t immediately absorbed into the bloodstream. When you smoke weed—or even inhale its aromatic constituents in smokeless forms—THC molecules enter the blood stream immediately. That’s because the chemical structure of THC allows it to pass through the lungs and directly into the bloodstream. However, once in the bloodstream, THC travels to the liver, where it gets metabolized, or broken down, before entering the rest of the body.
