Most kitchen floors today are not covered with carpet, but with ceramic tile, wood or cement so that the floor can be cleaned easily. However, after hours of baking or cleaning in the kitchen, one often feels tired and sore in the legs and feet. A good way to prevent foot and ankle fatigue is to put an anti-fatigue mat on the floor where there is the most traffic and standing. For example, anti-fatigue floor mats would be best used against the stove, main counter space, and kitchen sinks. Especially in the festive season, most people are seen standing in the kitchen for hours.

What makes a good anti-fatigue floor mat? The first thing to consider when buying an anti-fatigue floor mat is whether it is washable or not. If the mat is to be used in the kitchen or garage, you’ll need something washable, and it may need to be washed frequently.

There are four different anti fatigue floor mats to choose from:

  • Carpet – Carpet anti-fatigue floor mats may be the best for fatigue. The best is anti-slip, rubber backing. Also, make sure it is washable.
  • Vinyl – Vinyl anti-fatigue mats are typically used for industrial purposes, although they can be used at home. Check washability, and these mats can often be on the bottom. Great for the garage.
  • Foam – Foam floor mats are usually covered with a plastic conglomerate and are washable. However, they are quite thin and are used for light-duty purposes.
  • Rubber – Rubber floor mats can be purchased at hardware stores and often come as inter-locking mats. It is difficult to wash, but it can be wiped off if necessary. They can be great in a children’s playground or garage because there are fewer decorative options with these mats.

Choosing the right rubber anti-fatigue floor mat:

Remember, the thicker and denser the floor mat, the better. The denser the mat, the better the support and less fatigue of the legs and feet. While these mats come in a variety of designs, and look beautiful in the kitchen, their sole purpose is to reduce fatigue. When a foam mat perfectly matches the design of the kitchen, it is often difficult to adjust. Vinyl cover mats may not be for someone who spends hours on the stove or counter. There are gel-filled anti-fatigue floor mats that may be an option. However, they are expensive and may not be for everyone.
