The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved two targeted boosters for Omicron from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. Boosters are important to provide protection against the COVID-19 virus and Omicron variants. They are called “bivalent” vaccines. Protects against two types of ‘buy’ viruses.

These booster vaccines are bivalent as they target the original version of the coronavirus as well as the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants. The FDA no longer approves the original monovalent formulation as a booster for 6 months or more. The original Moderna and Pfizer vaccines against COVID-19 remain licensed as a primary vaccine series for people 6 months and older.

A bivalent booster dose improves protection against new Omicron subvariants. The vaccines, or natural immunity to infection, described above provide only partial protection.
