Currently, there is no internationally agreed-on set of anatomical terms for dermatologists and other healthcare providers to record surface anatomy locations on the human body. This lack of uniformity has clinical and research implications for both patients and their caregivers.
A Delphi consensus was convened to create a novel surface anatomy terminology that is clinically relevant and concise. The new terms were hierarchically mapped to SNOMED terms and NYU Numbers and physically mapped to 2D anatomical diagrams for clarity and reproducibility.
These models can be used for surgical planning and pre-surgical training, to help surgeons visualize the complexity of their patients’ bodies. They can also be used in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) environments to improve surgeons’ understanding of anatomy and surgical pathology.
