Wolves’ defenders put themselves out to secure yet another clean sheet at home. Ollie Watkins nearly scored for the visitors but his acrobatic effort went wide.

Kane’s speed helps break apart the defence, yet his shot had little force – something Lloris was more than capable of handling comfortably.

Ruben Neves’ corner

Toti made his mark early when he sneaked in behind Tyrone Mings and headed in Ruben Neves’ corner for Wolves to take an important lead against Villa. While their pressing was effective at creating problems for Villa’s direct running game, their counterattacking was vulnerable, as Jose Sa had to be alert to stop Emiliano Buendia’s long range attempt from going through. Villa threatened to make this game even more entertaining as they searched for their first goal under Unai Emery; Ollie Watkins had his acrobatic effort go wide while Jacob Ramsey’s cross was headed straight at him instead keeper before finally giving way and giving way 1-0.

Tiger midfielder Ivan Cavaleiro was an integral member of Wolves’ engine room and excelled at providing crosses into the box. Throughout the match he registered four shots (all off target), two chances created and also won several tackles; it was his fifth appearance of the season and now appears an attractive fantasy player option for managers to consider adding.

Toti’s first goal for Wolves

Toti scored Wolves’ opening goal of an intense West Midlands derby at Molineux on Tuesday night, sending his towering header smashing off the underside of the crossbar and giving Julen Lopetegui’s side an early advantage after just nine minutes.

Visitors tried to respond, but Jose Sa was quick to stretch out and turn Emiliano Buendia’s shot away from the post. Minutes later he stopped Matheus Cunha’s half volley from outside the box.

Toti took full advantage of his chance despite not being at the top of Conor Coady, Romain Saiss or Max Kilman’s center-back pecking order. On 27 minutes he nearly made it 2-0 with an attempt at header that was disallowed as offside by linesman; an appeal was sent for review but this decision stood. Wolves continued pressing but Villa held firm on defense.

Aston Villa’s best chance

No one could accuse the visitors of being under pressure here, but they are certainly aggressive and battle for every ball. Their best chance was when Podence’s pinball from a corner was headed toward him on the right byline; unfortunately his first-time shot just went over as Ederson looked on.

Villa has fallen behind at half time again this week and their fans will be hoping that Unai Emery can quickly address their defensive woes. Buendia almost brought Villa back into contention when he danced past Kilman before attempting a shot, only for Jose Sa to make an outstanding save to keep it out. Villa tried their hardest but couldn’t breach Wolves’ strong defence; Toti’s header gave Wolves victory with just nine minutes on the clock as Toti raised his head to score. They now stand on 40 points and within touching distance of survival going into an international break.

Wolves’ final chance

Wolves’ win propelled them out of relegation zone and put one foot toward Premier League play-offs – making the fans at Molineux cheer with joy as the full-time whistle blew, rounding off an exciting afternoon of football.

Villa continued their pursuit of an equalizer late on and came close in stoppage time when Jacob Ramsey found space down the right and his low cross was clipped by Craig Dawson; however, the ball managed to slip out from under his grasp and Jose Sa was able to collect safely. Also in stoppage time, Tyrone Mings timed his run perfectly to get on the end of a Douglas Luiz free-kick but his effort went over the crossbar; Wolves substituted Jhon Duran for Buendia in stoppage time and comfortably held on for victory; click HERE for all team news, match stats and more from across Premier League clubs!
