Nail Alcohol Testing
In the liver, ethanol is altered to ethyl glucuronide and reaches the nails through the blood, mainly via the nail bed capillaries. Nail keratin being 4* times thicker, will often capture and retain alcohol biomarkers for an extended period. EtG serves as the alcohol biomarker for nail alcohol tests. It is a direct alcohol biomarker because it is produced when alcohol is metabolized in the body. In contrast, to direct alcohol biomarkers like EtPa and EtG, indirect biomarkers like aspartate aminotransferase and carbohydrate-deficient transferrin can measure the effect of alcohol consumption on human health.
Hair Alcohol Testing
The Hair alcohol testing is a type of alcoholism detection test. It can be the solution for parents and loved ones who doubt their beloved ones may be involved in alcoholism. The body breaks down alcohol into two kinds of metabolites: ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and Fatty acid thy ester. Also, ethyl Palmitate serves as the basis of hair alcoholism tests. Sample Collection Method for Hair & Nail Alcoholism Tests
For hair alcohol tests, 200 hair strands are needed. A minimum 3-5 cm section is taken from the scalp for the EtPa and EtG tests. Depending upon the hair length strands, this test can give an overview of extreme alcohol consumption in person for three to six months.
For the nail alcohol test, clipping of the nails should be as close to the nail bed as possible. If the nail length is 5 mm, one nail clipping can be sufficient for the test. When the size of the nail is shorter, it’s better to take approximately 10 mg of nail clippings for a conclusive result. One can use fingernails/toenails, but never a mixture of both.
