Chronic pain is defined as pain that is experienced greater than 3 months. When pain interferes with daily living and affects job performance negatively, one tends to look for pain management services.  The first step is to discuss with your family doctor if you have one.  If not, you can use an online search.  Because there are so many pain clinics and so many doctors available, the search is not easy.

For your search to be successful, you have to have a general idea of what type of pain you have and what kind of treatments are available for your symptoms.  This can be done effectively by looking up, not the advertisers’ websites, but  “neutral” sites such as government sites like NIH,  sites like WebMD, and some authoritative private clinic sites such as ‘Mayo Clinic’. From these sites, you can learn what types of treatments are suitable for your specific symptoms.  Also, you can gain some idea of the possible cause of your pain.

With these specifics in mind, you can then search for clinics that can treat your type of symptoms locally.  The other factor that influences your search is the coverage by your health insurance.  If you belong to a network, then you look for a doctor in the network who can treat your type of pain.  If there are many doctors available, then you can go to each doctor’s website and go over the reviews by the patients.  By comparing patient reviews of different clinics, you can pick the one that you like.  Then, call the clinic and make an appointment.  The procedure would be the same if your health insurance allows going to any doctor.
