FETs and Thyristors

Thyristors are also called thyristors. They are semiconductor devices just like field effect transistors, and their appearance and packaging are basically the same, but their uses in circuits are different.

Thyristors can be divided into two types: unidirectional thyristors and bidirectional thyristors. They can be used as electronic switches in electronic circuits to control the on and off of loads; they can be used to adjust AC voltage to achieve dimming, speed, and temperature adjustment. In addition, unidirectional thyristors can also be used for rectification.

Thyristors are widely used in daily life. Like sound-controlled lights used at home, low-power unidirectional thyristors such as BT169 and MCR100-6 are generally used as electronic switches to drive light bulbs. In the stepless dimming of incandescent bulbs or the stepless speed regulation of electric fans, high-power bidirectional thyristors such as BT136 are commonly used to realize dimming or speed regulation.

Field effect transistors are unipolar semiconductor devices, which can be divided into junction field effect transistors and MOS field effect transistors. Each type of field effect transistor is divided into P-channel and N-channel. The field effect tube can be used as an amplifier device to amplify the signal in the electronic circuit, and can also be used as a switching device to control the on-off of the load, so the field effect tube has a wider range of uses than the thyristor.

In the power amplifier circuit, the VMOS field effect tube is used as the power amplifier component to improve the sound quality; in the switch circuit, when driving a large current load such as a motor, the MOS field effect tube is used as an electronic switch to reduce the burden of the previous drive circuit ( If you choose a thyristor, you need to draw a larger drive current from the previous circuit).

In summary, the difference between a field effect tube and a thyristor is: the field effect tube can amplify the signal, and can also be used as a high-speed electronic switch to control the on and off of the load. At the same time, it can also achieve functions such as speed regulation, dimming, and temperature regulation, while the thyristor cannot Used to form an amplifier to amplify signals. When used as an electronic switch, the operating frequency is not as high as that of a field effect tube, and can only be used for low-speed control.
