God gives us many amazing opportunities and blessings to be grateful for in life. Perhaps you have healthy, beautiful children, a loving, successful marriage, or maybe a fruitful career that has allowed you to support the family you love so much. These are just some of God’s blessings, and while it’s important to be grateful for them, it’s also necessary to acknowledge the stresses that can come from these blessings. We are human, after all. We are not perfect; we are prone to stress, anxiety, and burnout.

During such times of hardship, we can find comfort in knowing that God is always there for us, guiding us and, in fact, carrying us down the path of righteousness when we can’t carry ourselves.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Four Steps to Deal With Burnout

If you find yourself overworked and overburdened by the hardships of everyday life, don’t be afraid. Here are a few things you should keep in mind to help you deal with burnout;

Know Your Purpose

While it’s important to support and help your fellow believers, understand that you do not have to fix the world or be everyone’s savior. Your purpose in this world is to guide others to the one God who can raise them from the path of hardship. Jesus Christ is the greatest source of comfort and strength; all we can do is help others find His eternal light.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)

Rest

God will reward you abundantly if you work hard, but that doesn’t mean you should work yourself to sickness and death. Our Lord is merciful; he will never ask more of you than what you are capable of. If you find yourself growing tired and weak, don’t be afraid to let your mind, body, and spirit rest. We all have responsibilities; children, home, work, along with several other things. God will watch over you and your own when you are tired, so don’t be afraid to admit when you need to rest. Remember, even God rested on the seventh day.

And on the seventh day God finished His work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because, on it, God rested from all His work that he had done in creation. (Genesis 2:2-3)

Set Boundaries

When you have different day-to-day obligations between work, family, friends, and community, it’s important to establish clear boundaries between each facet of your life. When you’re working on one of these areas, do your best to ensure that you don’t let another area distract you from what you’re focusing on.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. (Colossians 3:23)

Stay spiritually healthy

Keep your focus on God’s word. Keep going to church to unite with the body of Christ at least every week or visit or join a church as soon as you can. Continue to pray without ceasing. All of the things that have contributed to your faith in the Lord will sustain and keep you going on this path as you become so that you can be an inspiration to others.

I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
