What is the border history of St. Martin and Saint Maarteen?

The history of the once-evolving border with both St. Martin and Sint Maarten is steeped in folktales, with one popular storey claiming that “to split the island into 2 segments, [in 1648] the residents were specifically told to choose either of two walkers, one is specifically chosen by that of the French-dominated culture while the other deliberately chosen by that of the Dutch-dominated culture, who were brought one after another to one end of the island.” You can see the spot from villa rental st martin, where they ultimately met was designated as the opposite extremity of the land, and the resulting line was indeed chosen here as the border separating Saint-Martin with Sint Maarten.

Checks at the border

Because neither part of the island is a member of the Schengen Area, travel between the island and Europe is subject to extensive border inspections. The boundary between both sides of that same island is hardly checked. The border at Franco-Dutch control pact has been applied in Saint Martin for unifying exterior inspections just at mainly two airports.
