Bamboo knitting needles have been around long before the material has taken over so many niches of our household. And everybody and their mother agrees that bamboo is a great material to choose when you are a beginner. However, more experienced knitters have also grown to embrace the qualities of this lightweight and renewable material. And there are a myriad of reasons why you should love our Bamboo range of needles, too.

The appearance of bamboo is deceptive! Because, contrary to what you might assume, this material is not wood, but grass – but it has it all! Did you know that bamboo plantations in India already cover nearly 14 Millions hectares of land? When it is time to harvest the plant, the stems are cut and put out to dry in the sun. When they are dry enough, they are trimmed and shaped and sanded, until they have the form you hold in your hands. There are no pesticides involved because fast-growing bamboo is a true miracle plant and has antibacterial power. The CO2 absorbing forests rejuvenate within an astonishing period of three to five years, whereas even the fastest growing trees need at least 20 years.

Our high quality bamboo needles are made from the knot-free, straight parts of the plant. When you pick up a set of bamboo double pointed needles or our circular needles for the first time, you will be surprised how extremely light they feel. Similar to wooden needles, these tools are very warm to the touch, but just way lighter. In addition, the material is slightly flexible, so that bamboo needles will perfectly adapt to your hand after prolonged use.

The surface is easy to grip, but not rough, so that bamboo knitting needles are well suited for all yarns. They work especially well when you plan to use smooth fibers such as silk, viscose or cotton, which require a mixture of lubricity and grip on the needle. In addition, the bamboo tips are not as sharp as those of metal needles, so that you will not split the yarn as easily, either.

Therefore, apart from being recommendable for newbies to the craft, bamboo needles are a fantastic choice for loose knitters, as they will prevent your yarn from falling off the tip. You can just hang on that split second longer to the stitches, when you have quite a full needle. If you like to knit larger items, try our single pointed needles. They come in two different lengths with a green bamboo knob on the head, to prevent your yarn from falling off.

Bamboo needles are particularly great, if you suffer from hand fatigue or arthritis, as bamboo is a flexible material. It will bend slightly under your fingers. The metal or aluminium hardware may provide for a faster knit, but these needles will also tire your joints inevitably. We receive a lot of feedback from knitting enthusiasts, who love to knit their chunky yarn with our Jumbo sized bamboo needles. They will not break easily, yet they weigh almost nothing in your hands and allow you to finish any bulky WIP almost effortlessly and with pleasure.

People who have sensory issues love our bamboo needles, as well. The soft clicking sound is easy on your sense of hearing and will instantly calm your mind and soul. If the pattern on your yarn is not too demanding, you can quickly slip into a kind of meditative mode and get lost in the rhythm of the needles and your movements.

The tips of bamboo knitting needles can be very finely shaped, but are subject to a certain amount of wear. Similar to wooden needles, bamboo needles can be cared for by lightly sanding them. If you use the needles frequently, the natural grease contained in your skin should keep the needles supple enough. It will never hurt, however, to also rub them with a drop of oil. Then pat them gently with a dry cloth so that no residue gets in contact with your yarn, and you will enjoy them for a long time.
