Winter is hard on your skin, as it takes an onslaught of cold and dry air to get you through the winter. If you don’t have a skincare routine in place now, you’ll get the dreaded winter skin that is usually only seen in the Middle East. To avoid dry, chapped, itchy, cracked skin, follow these tips to prepare for winter.

Tip #1: Stay hydrated

It is important to drink lots of water because as we get older our skin loses its ability to hold moisture. Water will help keep your skin hydrated and plump so it is less prone to dryness.

Tip #2: Moisturize

When you get out of the shower, give your face a moisturizing splash of lotion to lock in moisture and even out skin tone. Also, apply moisturizer under your eyes at night, as this is a particularly dry area of the body.

Tip #3: Cleanse & Exfoliate

Wash your face in the morning with a gentle cleanser, either on your own or with a cleanser from your favorite skincare brand. Avoid exfoliating too often, which can leave you feeling overly clean and itchy.

Tip #4: Use an SPF

SPF is important as the skin needs to be protected from the harmful effects of the sun.

Tip #5: Use Sunscreen

Apply sunscreen to the skin and reapply every two hours. Remember to reapply to lips as lips contain melanin and need extra protection.

Tip #6: Brush your hair

Brushing your hair may seem like a luxury, but it is very important to make sure your scalp and hair are well cleaned. Your scalp is made up of 80% blood vessels and if they are clogged it can lead to hair loss and skin problems. Use a gentle shampoo, brush gently, and pat your hair dry to ensure good circulation to your scalp.

Tip #7: Take off your sunglasses

Take off your sunglasses when you are going into the sun as the sunlight coming through the lens will heat the skin.

Tip #8: Don’t forget to drink water

You will find that you need more water when you are on vacation and therefore you may end up not drinking enough. Make sure you are drinking about six to eight glasses a day.

Tip#9:Moisturise With Moisturising Creams

Moisturizing creams are great for this time of the year since they can get really cold and windy. Moisturizing creams can keep your skin moisturized and hydrated, even when it’s cold.

Tip #10:Wash your face using natural oils and natural soaps

The problem with many people is that they wash their face with harsh products – or even the same harsh products over and over again. The difference between these is simple – oils are lighter, less harsh, and work well on your face, whereas soaps are heavier, harsher, and work well on your body.

Tip#11:Avoid using dry skin products

Make sure that you are not drying out your skin with products for dry skin. Instead, keep your skin hydrated with a moisturizer that has a lot of moisture. Don’t put anything in your eyes to prevent getting dry – you will end up looking older if you do.
