Salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory, keratolytic, and antiseptic properties. For the first time it was isolated from willow bark, and today it is synthesized chemically for use in cosmetic and medical purposes. It belongs to the group of hydro acids along with the so-called fruit acids (alpha hydro acids, or AHA) and is labeled as beta hydro acids (BHA). One of the derivatives of salicylic acid is aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid).

How does salicylic acid work?

Salicylic acid breaks desmosomes — the intercellular bonds that hold together the keratinized skin particles – and promotes their exfoliation and accelerates the renewal of the surface layer of the skin.

Salicylic acid solves a lot of problems associated with problem skin:

  • It has an exfoliating effect;
  • It affects the activity of the sebaceous glands and eliminates excessive fat content;
  • Effectively combats blackheads, acne, and comedones;
  • Promotes the narrowing of enlarged pores, helping to remove them from the accumulation of fat and dead cells;
  • It has an anti-inflammatory effect;
  • Penetrating the pores, the acid deeply cleanses them from the accumulation of sebum and external impurities, reduces black spots and the appearance of acne.
  • Evens out the tone and relief of the face fights visible age-related skin changes.
  • Brightens and whitens the skin, reducing pigmentation and traces of post-acne.
  • Improves microcirculation and accelerates the healing process of tissues.

Basic facts

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that stimulates the renewal of skin cells and destroys the connections between dead cells. This means that it not only exfoliates dead dry cells but also effectively removes them, returning the skin to an even texture. In this condition, the skin absorbs other care products better, which increases their effectiveness. In addition, makeup products are easier and more evenly applied to smooth skin. Thus, using salicylic acid, you can increase the effectiveness of beauty care products and it’s an initial step towards flawless skin.

Salicylic Acids Serum are widely used in cosmetology: It increases the elasticity and hydration of the skin, the second are responsible for saturating cells with the necessary macro-and microelements, restoring the lipid barrier of the skin, the third is aimed at accelerated renewal of the epidermis and its exfoliation.

A weapon against acne

Salicylic acid is one of the few active ingredients used in over-the-counter products. However, it effectively copes with its task, reducing inflammation and rashes. Thanks to its exfoliating action, salicylic acid deeply cleanses the skin prone to rashes from dirt and sebum, and with regular use resists the accumulation of fat and dead cells on the skin surface. The natural antibacterial effect prevents bacteria from entering the inner layers of the skin, preventing new rashes from forming.

Salicylic acid contraindications

Despite all the positive qualities, this component can also be harmful to the skin – especially if you overdo it with the concentration or area of application. Do not use salicylic acid products on damaged areas of the skin and moles.
