Excessive alcohol consumption doesn’t just affect individuals but has a profound impact on society as a whole. It can lead to increased violence, crime, and multiple alcohol-related accidents. Too much drinking can also raise the risk of mental and physical health complications. Alcohol detection test plays a vital role in understanding an individual’s drinking habits, including their history, frequency, and consumption patterns. These tests, also called alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse tests, help gauge the extent of alcohol use disorder. Regular and heavy alcohol consumption significantly increases the risk of developing severe health issues like liver, heart, and kidney disorders.

Types of Alcoholism Tests

Hair Alcohol Testing:

A hair alcoholism test can be the solution for relatives & parents who doubt their dear ones are addicted to alcohol. In the liver, ethanol is altered to EtG or ethyl glucuronide and reachesthe hairs via the bloodstream, to the hair follicles, and then to the hairs. These metabolites are known as alcohol biomarkers and are immersed into the hair individually. The alcohol biomarkers in the hair symbolize the period of alcohol consumption in an individual and serve as the foundation for alcohol detection tests.

Sample Collection Process- For hair alcohol detection tests, 200 hair strands are required. A minimum 3-5 centimeter section is taken from the scalp for the EtPa & EtG test. Depending on the hair length, this test gives an overview of extreme alcohol consumption in an individual for three to six months.

Nail Alcohol Testing:

The body breaks down alcoholism into two metabolites, i.e., Fatty acid thy ester, & ethyl glucuronide (EtG). Ethyl Palmitate (EtPa) is the basis of the hair alcohol detection test. Nail keratin, being four 4x thicker than the hairs, will typically capture and have alcohol biomarkers for a long period. Therefore, ethyl glucuronide serves as the alcohol biomarker for nail tests. It is a direct alcohol biomarker. In contrast to direct biomarkers such as EtPa and EtG, indirect biomarkers like aspartate aminotransferase (AST), carbohydrate-deficient transferrin CDT), etc., can measure the impact of alcohol consumption on personal health.

Sample Collection Process- For the nail alcohol detection test, clipping of the nail is required. One nail clipping can be adequate for the test if the nail length is 5 millimeters. When the nail size is shorter than 5 millimeters, taking 10 milligrams of nail clippings for a definitive result is better. Either one can use both toenails/fingernails but do not mix them. Nail alcoholism test can reveal the history of alcohol consumption in an individual for up to the past twelve months.
